Nature VS Nurture

Took my kids to the Tucson Children's Museum.

They have anatomically correct baby dolls at the Tucson Children's Museum.

There is a boy anatomically correct baby doll and a girl anatomically correct baby doll.

I watched several children play with these babies. I was intrigued.

"That boy baby needs a DIAPER," said one little girl.  "He has WRONG parts!"

Maya came up to me.

"Mama, does that boy baby have WRONG parts?"  she asked.

"Absolutely NOT!"  I said.  We had a discussion about PARTS and the importance of PARTS.

She ran off.

"BOYS DO NOT HAVE WRONG PARTS!" she informed the little girl.

After overhearing the convo, my son took an interest in the anatomically correct boy baby doll.

He picked up the doll and started swinging it around wildly yelling in a high pitched 'baby' voice, "I'M MR. BABY!  I'M MR. BABY!"

I pretended to make the baby cry, "WAH! WAH! WAH!" I said.

Then he said, "Someone has got to feed this kid!"

He roughly shoved the baby in a grocery cart and began filling it with plastic food.

He filled the whole cart.

He looked at me with distress.  "This is going to be EXPENSIVE!"

Then he proceeded to hit the anatomically correct boy baby doll in the head with a piece of plastic corn.

"Why did you hit your baby in the head with a corn, T?"  I asked.

He sighed.  "Oh... there are lots of reasons."

He then forced his baby wear a bowl as a hat.

Maya gravitated toward the girl anatomically correct baby doll.  She cooed and coddled and wrapped it in a warm blanket.

She gave the baby to me to hold so baby wouldn't cry when she was away cooking dinner.

The entire exchange made wonder at what point my children learned this behavior.  Or did they just come like this?

Society over-simplifies how things SHOULD be if you are a boy vs a girl.

Bums me out to see my son already stressing over the high price of plastic corn in today's competitive market.

What are your thoughts on the issue?

How do the following phrases make you feel?

Boys don't (or shouldn't) show as much emotion as girls.

Girls are naturally more nuturing and sensitive than boys.

Mmmmk.  I will have to contemplate the issue and delve deeper at a later date.

Then we found ourselves at the bottom of the ocean in a submarine and we were gonna drown.

"MAYDAY MAYDAY!  10-4!  OVER AND OUT! ROGER DODGER!  HELP US! WE'RE GONNA DROWN!

IT'S MY TURN TO USE THE TELELOHONE AND CALL FOR HELP YOU LITTLE BRAT!"

We faced dire circumstances as we ran out of sour patch kids and ritz crackers.

Then we traveled back to prehistorical times via submarine.  We narrowly escaped with our lives and our dignity.

I love my job.
